🎨 The Terp Wheel & Why Terps Matter More Than THC

July 15, 2025

When Western Cultured set out to build a cannabis brand from the ground up, we made a bold
choice: focus on terpenes, not just THC. That’s why we created and trademarked the first-ever
terp wheelTM, a visual, educational tool that helps consumers explore strains by aroma, flavor,
and effect, not just potency.

🌿 What’s the Terp Wheel TM
Our terp wheelTM — now federally registered, categorizes terpenes into four intuitive flavor
families:
● Spicy/Gas (🔴 Red)
● Sweet (🔵 Blue)
● Sour/Citrus (🟡 Yellow)
● Earthy/OG (🟢 Green)

Each family links specific terpenes to sensory notes (like lemon, cinnamon, hops, lavender) and
corresponding effects (like focus, energy, relaxation, or euphoria). It’s not just beautiful to look
at—it’s a tool for education and empowerment.

🔬 What Are Terpenes, and Why Should You Care?

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis (and many plants) that contribute to the
scent, flavor, and effects of each strain. Think of them like the essential oils of cannabis,
limonene smells like citrus, myrcene like earth and musk, and linalool like lavender.
But they’re not just about smell—they shape the experience. Here’s how:
● Limonene: Common in citrus strains, may uplift mood and promote alertness.
● Myrcene: Found in earthy, musky strains, may be sedative and calming.
● Pinene: Smells like pine, can help with focus and clarity.
● Linalool: Lavender-like, often associated with stress relief and relaxation.
● Caryophyllene: Spicy and peppery, with potential anti-inflammatory properties.

What’s important to understand is that THC is not the whole story. The terpene profile, and
how it interacts with cannabinoids plays a major role in whether you feel energized, relaxed,
giggly, or clear-headed. It’s called the entourage effect, and it’s why two strains with the same
THC level can feel totally different.

📦 Color-Coded Packaging, Curated Experience
To help guide your journey, we color-code all our packaging based on terpene families:
Flavor Profile Color Sensory Style & Effects
Spicy/Gas 🔴 Red Bold, peppery, invigorating
Sweet 🔵 Blue Fruity, floral, uplifting
Sour/Citrus 🟡 Yellow Tangy, zesty, energetic
Earthy/OG 🟢 Green Piney, herbal, grounding
This system makes it easier to shop by feel, not by numbers, and helps budtenders give
personalized recommendations based on mood, activity, or time of day.
