The Grape Ape strain is a widely popular cultivar that many breeders have taken their shot on. This is partly due to its exciting genetics, which contains classic and landrace strains. One breeder that does Grape Ape justice is Artizen Cannabis, a Washington State-based producer and processor focused on zen-like practices.
Grape Ape Strain
Grape Ape is a pure indica created by crossing three beloved strains, Mendocino Purps, Skunk #1, and Afghani. As a mix of two hybrids and an indica, Grape Ape offers a potentially relaxing experience with calming and sedative properties. Further, similar to its parents, Grape Ape has a medium potency of around 18% THC.

Genetics
Diving further into its genetics, Mendocino Purps is a hybrid strain that originates from Mendocino County in Northern California, where some of the best weed in the country comes from. This strain has won multiple awards, including Leafly’s Strain of the Year in 2007. Mendo Purps lends Grape Ape more than just its grape flavor & aroma; it also contributes to its potential sleepy and giggly effects.
Further, Skunk #1 is another hybrid strain in Grape Ape’s lineage. And as its name suggests, this strain lends Grape Ape a skunky smell. Further, this parent contributes to its reported appetite-inducing effects.
Lastly, Grape Ape contains the landrace strain Afghani. Also known as Afghan and Afghanistan, this potent indica strain is one of the earliest varieties of cannabis. Breeders love this strain due to its heavy resin content, which is passed down to Grape Ape. Further, this strain lends its potentially sleepy and relaxing effects to Grape Ape.
Cannabinoids & Terpenes
With a high content of CBG in two of its parents, Skunk #1 and Afghani, Grape Ape also contains this cannabinoid. CBG is shown to have potential therapeutic effects, including pain relief, and anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. In fact, research has shown that CBG may be a great aid in relieving inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Huntington’s Disease, Glaucoma, and fighting cancer cells.
Additionally, those two strains also contribute to Grape Ape’s high myrcene content. This might lend it anti-inflammatory, sleep-supporting, mood-enhancing, stress-relieving, and immune-strengthening properties.
Appearance & Flavors
As you may be able to guess from the name, Grape Ape flower holds shades of purple in its dense green buds. You’ll find deep, almost grey tones of purple throughout the nugs. Further, fiery orange pistils are littered across the surface, with crystal trichomes in every nook and cranny.
As previously mentioned, Grape Ape has a skunky grape aroma. Other flavors that can be detected include black currant, plum, fresh-cut grass, and ginger.
